About Udo Erasmus
Udo Erasmus, Ph.D. is most known as the creator of Udo’s Choice® and as an international authority on fats, oils, cholesterol and human health. What most people don’t know is the amazing story of how his incredible journey began and unfolded.
Udo’s Humble Beginnings
Born during the Second World War in Poland of Latvian refugees, Udo only knew life to be full of challenges. Being a refugee himself, at age ten he and his family immigrated to Canada in the hope of finding a more peaceful community and improved opportunities. What they found was a humble existence on 112 acres of bushland in Northern Canada, with none of the familiar comforts like electricity, telephones, or even radio. However, it was this very simplicity that awakened Udo’s senses and his deep appreciation of Nature and the magnificent wonders of the biological world and its delicate complexities.
In addition to actively participating in helping his family grow organic food in their garden, Udo also entertained himself by picking wild berries and herbs and exploring abandoned mines with other children in his community.
SCIENCE: Udo’s Calling
From an early age, Udo was drawn to the sciences, which were also his favourite subjects in school. His discovery of science came from a very pure place. Reminiscent of Thoreau, Udo fell in love with the biological world and affectionately remembers being entranced by watching small spiders move through grass, and collecting skulls from dead animals he found in the woods, meadows, and riverbanks near his home.
After receiving his B.Sc. degree in Honours Zoology with a major in Psychology at The University of British Columbia, Udo continued his quest for scientific learning by next completing graduate studies in Biochemistry and Genetics, gaining early recognition in 1967 by publishing one of his research papers in the prestigious peer-reviewed journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Four years later in 1971, Udo was similarly honoured by having two more of his papers published in the peer-reviewed journal Mutation Research.

The Long Crooked Path From Hell To Heaven
Unafraid of hard work and risk-taking, Udo’s life journey has been colourful and filled with bumps in the road. He speaks beautifully about his “crooked path” on his Udo Erasmus – The Omega Man page:
“My path includes brief jobs in several different trades: fruit picking, dairy farming, logging, mining, carpentry, house painting, clearing land, burning brush, growing food, gardening, and finally pesticide spraying. I spent a year in medicine and several years in science research. One winter, I had a part-time job babysitting pickled fish in a fish museum. One summer, I worked for the fish and game branch. Several other summers, I worked on a drilling, blasting, and prospecting crew in the mountains of British Columbia…
…In the 60s hippie era I even tried drugs, couch-surfed, traded a Winchester 30-30 for a trumpet that I played on the front steps of my house after a few drinks of Southern Comfort, played flute and harmonica, sang in a choir but more often in the shower, hitchhiked for six days from Toronto to Vancouver without a penny to my name, camped out, started a nude beach, and lived in co-ops, communes, apartments and houses both in rural and urban settings. It was wild, but it was fun!”

Udo’s Life-Changing Twist Of Fate: Poisoned by Pesticide
As he described it, in 1980 Udo’s life “took a significant turn when he was poisoned whilst carelessly working with pesticides.” After discovering that modern conventional medicine couldn’t help him, Udo realized that he had to seek his own answers and take personal responsibility for his own health.
It was this twisted fate that began the snowball effect that led Udo ultimately down the rabbit hole of studying research about nutrition and health, excavating original research studies that were largely unknown, and applying his university education in biological sciences, biochemistry, genetics, and psychology to cure himself naturally. His fierce pioneering spirit paid off, especially as he unearthed powerful findings about the effects of fats and oils on human health that he compiled in his landmark Canadian best-selling book that became his thesis that earned him a Ph.D. in Nutrition in 1986: Fats and Oils, that later was became Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill.
The Fatman, Flax Oil, & Udo’s Choice® Oil Blends
After 15 years of discoveries about the health-promoting properties of fats, Udo became known as “The Fatman” and a go-to authority in the field of nutrition.
