About Kate Nicholson JD, Civil Rights Attorney

A Harvard Law Graduate and Senior Fellow at Dartmouth College, Kate Nicholson JD served in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice for more than 20 years. As a Federal Civil Rights Prosecutor she practiced disability and health-related civil rights law and secured U.S. Supreme Court and other legal victories Presently, Kate speaks, writes and advocates about the treatment of pain, especially in relation to the opioid crisis.

Americans with Disability Act (ADA) Champion

Kate Nicholson is a nationally-recognized expert in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). While at the U.S. Department of Justice, Kate brought foundational ADA cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, primarily drafted the current ADA regulations, and oversaw litigation both within the division and in U.S. Attorney’s Offices nationwide.  During those years, she also had persistent pain following a surgical mishap that left her largely unable sit, stand or walk.

Pain Treatment Advocate

Since 2016, Nicholson has been advocating about the treatment of pain.  In addition to her riveting TEDx talk, Kate speaks to undergraduate and graduate students at universities, such as Dartmouth College and Tulane, about the drug overdose crisis and the treatment of pain.  Kate also keynotes at professional conferences for primary care and pain management clinicians. She has published opinion pieces in such publications as The Hill, The LA Times, The Washington Post, and STAT makes media appearances, and is currently working with David Black Literary Agency on a book that pivots from her personal story to examine pain policy in the context of the opioid crisis.

Now based in Colorado, Kate consults on issues related to health policy and accessibility through ADAadept, an organization that offers ‘Tailored Sollutions to ADA Compliance.’ Among their service offerings, ADAadept helps organizations, companies and universities ensure accessibility of their services for those living with disabilities. They perform evaluations, compliance reviews, provide professional staff training, model policies, and help troubleshoot around complex disability and access issues. Pain & Disability Rights Leadership

In addition to her work with ADAadept, Kate collaborates with a number of organizations. She is Co-Chairperson of the Chronic Pain/Opioid Task Force of the National Centers on Independent Living, a coalition of disability rights organizations from every state and US territory.  She also works with For Grace, an organization dedicated to women in pain, and is the Senior Policy Advisor to the Alliance for the Treatment of Intractable Pain.

Art, Ideas & Culture

Less known than her pain and disability advocacy and education is Kate’s love and service of the the arts. As an arts lover, Kate is also the President of Tilt West, a Colorado-based non-profit that is a cultural hub for provocative writing and conversations about art, ideas and culture.  She currently serves on the advisory board for the art museum at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
