About Irvin Yalom MD
One of the pioneers in Existential Psychotherapy and Group Psychotherapy, Dr. Irvin Yalom has followed a professional career as a psychiatrist courageously addressing the most poignant challenges of living, inside the therapeutic relationship and beyond.
Existential Psychotherapy
Unlike most thought-leaders in the world of psychotherapy, Dr. Irvin Yalom had no interest in developing a new therapy approach. Instead, he was more interested in how the universal challenges of living could be addressed across theoretical orientations and modalities.
Having studied many of the great philosophers and being strongly influenced by the work of his Existential Psychotherapy predecessor and mentor Psychologist Dr. Rollo May, Yalom came to appreciate how the wisdom from philosophy could become a powerful bridge to help his patients in the psychotherapy context.
Like Existential philosophy, Existential Psychotherapy embraces the inherent paradoxes of living. Betwixt and between birth and death, we all face the challenge of seeking meaning in our tenuous and uncertain tenure of existence, longing for both freedom, while simultaneously experiencing the poignant desire to avoid isolation.
Humble Beginnings
The son of hard-working Russian immigrants who opened a grocery store after arriving, Yalom’s early life was very humble, living in a small rat and roach-infested flat above the family’s store until moving to a clean and more spacious home when he was fourteen. When he was fifteen, Irvin met his first love, Marilyn, who was to become the beloved love of his life.
Road To Psychiatry
After finishing his undergraduate studies at George Washington University, Yalom completed his medical training as an MD from Boston University (marrying Marilyn midway through med school), as well as his internship at Mount Sinai Hospital and his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After finishing his medical training, Yalom headed to Hawaii with his wife and small children where he served for two years in the army as part of the mandatory draft before finally settling in Palo Alto at Stanford University, eventually working his way up to Professor of Psychiatry. He is now an emeritus professor at Stanford and still continues his psychiatry practice in San Francisco and Palo Alto.
Innovative Author – Bridging Psychology & Philosophy in Unprecedented
Ways
Immersed in his life as a psychiatrist in academia, Yalom’s first book released was the textbook The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy which has become the respected seminal classic text for group therapy internationally. While he also published another highly acclaimed textbook, Existential Psychotherapy, Yalom’s creative ventures to broaden the applications of psychotherapy took him down other paths as a writer in both the nonfiction and fiction genres.
Breaking the mold with his bestselling Love’s Executioner and Other Tales of Psychotherapy, there was no turning back as his humanization of the therapy process and his unique voice as an author/therapist. In addition to his other heart-opening and paradigm-shifting non-fiction books, such as Momma and the Meaning of Life: Tales of Psychotherapy, The Gift of Therapy , Every Day Gets a Little Closer: A Twice-Told Therapy, Creatures of a Day: And Other Tales of Psychotherapy, and Staring at the Sun, Yalom took another adventurous leap when he began immersing himself into the creation of historical fiction and other creative storytelling as another means to teach (especially therapists) about the complexities of the human condition and psychotherapy process itself, starting with When Nietzche Wept: A Novel of Obsession, Lying on the Couch: A Novel and later The Schopenhauer Cure and The Yalom Reader: Selections from the Work of a Master Therapist and Storyteller.
