Globally respected astrophysicist turned regenerative soil health, climate change & food security activist post-retirement, Dr. Phil Gregory has passionately lived his life as a scientist and educator, inspiring possibility-thinking so that there is hope that future generations might have a viable planet to inherit.
Discoveries in Astrophysics
Now a Professor Emeritus in Physics and Astronomy at The University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver Canada, Dr. Phil Gregory received his BSc and MSc from Queen’s University, Ontario and a PhD in Physics from The University of Manchester in 1969, specializing in radio astronomy and space physics.
On his return to Canada in 1970, Phil worked at the University of Toronto in the astronomy department where he made a major astronomical discovery in 1972 concerning a newly discovered x-ray source named Cygnus X-3. While it looked at first that he had captured a supernova explosion (which drew the attention of astronomers around the world), it turned out that what he discovered was a new kind of binary star harbouring a neutron star that was cannibalizing its companion and ejecting two huge jets of gas travelling close to the speed of light. The discovery received a lot of attention scientifically (special issue of Nature Phys. Sci. 239,704, 1972) as well as in the media. It also led to a faculty appointment at the University of British Columbia in the Physics department in 1973, where he remained for the rest of his career, rising through the ranks to full professor. At UBC Gregory initiated and directed a project called the Galactic Radio Patrol using the world’s largest steerable telescope. His research team made many interesting astronomical discoveries including a supernova remnant with a special kind of highly magnetized X-ray emitting pulsar at its centre, known as a magnetar.
Bayesian Logical Data Analysis for the Physical Sciences (2005 & 2010)
Following the collapse of the telescope in 1988, Phil became very interested in Bayesian Probability Theory which he taught to graduate students for many years, including 5 years into retirement, eventually writing the textbook Bayesian Logical Data Analysis for the Physical Sciences, which was published by Cambridge University Press in 2005 and 2010. Bayesian Probability Theory (BPT) provides the extension to deductive logic that deals with the situation where we are faced with incomplete information. During the following decade, Gregory successfully applied Bayesian Probability theory to many fascinating challenges in astronomy, most recently to the detection of planets orbiting other stars in our galaxy.
SOIL HEALTH & DEGRADATION
In 2015, Phil again shifted his focus in response to an announcement by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization that appeared in Scientific American in Dec. 2014, “Only 60 Years of Farming Left If Soil Degradation Continues.”
The UN announcement was a tipping point for Gregory. Faced with his concern for the fate of humanity, he turned his attention to agriculture to see what if anything could be done about it. In this investigation, he kept running into the connections between agricultural practices, soil health, climate change, and human health. As an outsider, yet equipped with solid scientific research knowledge and skills, Phil was able to span these many different silos of knowledge not hampered by the blinders of specialization or dogmatic belief structures. As an astrophysicist, it was like he had come to explore the earth from another planet.
