Barral’s Visceral Manipulation: Indications, Applications & Science

Jean-Pierre Barral was a Pioneer of the Interstitium & other important structures and functions in the human body long before the recent discovery of these unsung tissues that were recently just discovered & described as a “newfound organ” in 2018.

Integrating Conventional Orthopedics With Osteopathic Visceral Manipulation

Dr. Gail’s initial private practice in Newport Beach, California, emphasized integrative manual therapy in the fields of functional orthopedics, sports injury, TMJ/Dental disorders, concussion, digestive disorders, and chronic pain, including head, neck, and facial pain. In 1985, Gail became an instructor for the Institute of Physical Art, which is a post-graduate education curriculum firmly rooted in the foundations of functional orthopedics.

Her long-time passion for helping her clients access strategies for optimal alignment and movement by integrating physical therapy for all body systems eventually led Wetzler to courses in the osteopathic approach to somatic dysfunctions.  In 1992, Gail became an instructor and eventually became the Curriculum Director of the Barral Institute.

Barral Institute: Research & Science of Visceral, Neural, and Vascular Manual Therapies

The Barral Institute, founded by Jean Pierre Barral, PT, DO was established for research and the advancement of manual therapy education. Based in the science of anatomy, this institute studies the interrelationships of the interstitium and other deeper connective tissues in our body (viscera, neurological, vascular) to muscle/skeletal, cellular and even emotional challenges. Wetzler currently teaches 16 different levels of postgraduate continuing education courses in manual techniques,

What IS ‘Visceral Manipulation’?

VM assists functional and structural imbalances throughout the body including musculoskeletal, vascular, nervous, urogenital, respiratory, digestive and lymphatic dysfunction. It evaluates and treats the dynamics of motion and suspension in relation to organs, membranes, fascia and ligaments. VM increases proprioceptive communication within the body, thereby revitalizing a person and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture.

An integrative approach to evaluation and treatment of a patient requires assessment of the structural relationships between the viscera, and their fascial or ligamentous attachments to the musculoskeletal system. Strains in the connective tissue of the viscera can result from surgical scars, adhesions, illness, posture or injury. Tension patterns form through the fascial network deep within the body, creating a cascade of effects far from their sources for which the body will have to compensate. This creates fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body must move around, and this chronic irritation gives way to functional and structural problems.

Jean-Pierre Barral: Visceral Manipulation Pioneer, Researcher, & Visionary

Jean-Pierre Barral, Physical Therapist, Diplomate of Osteopathy, and pioneer of functional anatomy and research discovered the presence, the role of and ways to treat of the Interstitium and other connective tissues long before the recent medical discovery that the Interstitium is indeed not only an important structure but functions as an organ as well.

“With the help of Dr. Serge Cohen, a Grenoble radiologist, Barral also documented changes in the viscera before and after manipulation. They employed x-ray fluoroscopy and ultrasound to record changes in position and motion, as well as fluid exchange and evacuation. Later they conducted additional research with a team of electrical engineers and technicians using infrared emissions from the body.” (From BarralInstitute.com website)

Barral’s appreciation of the complexities and interrelationships of the multiplicity of tissues, structures, and organs of the body and how to treat them through novel interventions is not only unprecedented and paradigm-shifting, but also offers hope to countless people who suffer from conditions otherwise untreatable by the current medical system and technology.

By discovering the precise and complex connections between the organs, the spine, the joints, the brain, & everything in-between, Jean-Pierre Barral discovered a missing link in our healthcare treatment that may shift the trajectory of how previously misdiagnosed and misunderstood health conditions might now be more adequately addressed.

Structure and Distribution of an Unrecognized Interstitium in Human Tissues

Jean-Pierre Barral has understood and been working with the ‘Interstitium’ using his Visceral Manipulation interventions for over 40 years, since long before modern-day medical scientists knew the organ even existed less than 2 years ago.

Barral’s Visceral Manipulation Books & DVD’s

Visceral Manipulation (Revised Edition) by Jean-Pierre BarralVisceral Manipulation

Osteopathy and other systems of manual medicine have developed a variety of models for understanding the mechanics of proper and improper motion of the musculoskeletal system. In this important and pioneering work, that same structural vision is applied to the visceral system. The central premise of Visceral Manipulation is that the interrelationship of structure and function among the internal organs is at least as strong as that among the constituents of the musculoskeletal system; and that, like the musculoskeletal system, manipulation of the viscera can be beneficially used in the treatment of a wide variety of problems affecting any of the body’s systems. In this revised edition, over a hundred-and-thirty new illustrations and photographs, many of them in two colors, graphically depict the ideas in the text. Minor updates have also been made to the original text. (Book Description from Amazon)
