Michelle Emson: LGBTQI & Mental Health Human Rights Advocate
Monday, June 19, 2017
Join me on The Dr. Theresa Nicassio Show with Michelle Emson talking about her story as a Trans Mompreneur and some of the special challenges and heart-warming initiatives that some businesses and organizations are doing to help support and advocate for the often-marginalized Trans community.
About Michelle Emson
Michelle Emson is an entrepreneur, LGBTQI human rights activist, keynote speaker, workshop facilitator, and documentary film maker. An openly-out transgender woman, Michelle is currently living and working in Ontario, Canada.
Never Too Old To Be Who You Truly Are
Having transitioned late in life (at age 50), Michelle firmly believes that one is never too old, nor too young, to step into their true authentic selves and live the life they deserve, without being bound by outdated social constructs of gender, identity, and sexuality. Her advocacy work, activism, public speaking, and workshops, all serve to raise awareness of trans* people and the issues that they face on their journey.
Michelle’s Message of ACCEPTANCE…
Michelle firmly believes that; “If we can learn to accept, and love, our own uniqueness then just maybe we can come to love, and respect, the uniqueness of others.” A strikingly simple concept if we all start from the point that we are all, just, human beings.
Michelle’s first documentary film, co-produced with Olena, “Pride of Ukraine (2015)” premiered at the Canadian Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine and shared the struggle to hold a peaceful Pride march in the capital.
Award-Winning Film Maker
Her second film “Transgender Life in Slovenia (2016)”, which won Best Film at the 2016 Ljubljana International LGBTI Film Festival, tells the story of 10 transgender and gender non-binary people from across the country. It provides an interesting insight into the challenges that face transgender people and offers a touching and engaging view into their daily lives and struggles.
Mental Health Advocate
A mental health survivor, Michelle lives with Bipolar II Disorder which was misdiagnosed, and mistreated, for over twenty years. She now advocates through speaking engagements, seminars, and workshops, to “End the Stigma” around mental health and shares her story to raise awareness and encourage everyone to start talking about mental health.
Project Semicolon as a Source of HOPE in Life’s Darkest Moments
Having survived her own brush with suicide, Michelle supports the concept of the “Project Semicolon”; “a semicolon is used when an author could have chosen to end their sentence, but instead, chose not to. The author is you, and the sentence is your life.” The metaphor simply means don’t give up, there is hope, and this does not have to be the end.
“If we can learn to accept, and love, our own uniqueness then just maybe we can come to love, and respect, the uniqueness of others.”
